One Year of Little Sprouts: What This First Year Has Taught Me
Share
One year.
I’m honestly not sure how that’s possible.
On September 9, 2025, I officially launched Little Sprouts Outfitters with a little collection called Cornfield Cozy. I had spent months researching brands, ordering inventory, building a website, figuring out packaging, second-guessing nearly every decision, and trying to turn an idea in my head into an actual business.
And now, somehow, Little Sprouts is turning one.
When I look back at this first year, I don’t immediately think about sales numbers or how many orders I’ve packed. I think about boxes stacked around my house, late nights working after Eliot went to bed, loading up for markets, meeting customers in person, learning what families actually want, making mistakes, celebrating little wins, and watching this business slowly become something real.

It All Started With My Little Sprout
If you’ve been here for a while, you probably already know that Little Sprouts Outfitters exists because of my son, Eliot — my original little “Sprout.”
Becoming a mom completely changed the way I looked at children’s clothing. I wanted pieces that were comfortable enough for everyday life but still reflected the world we were raising him in.
We live on our family farm in Oregon. Agriculture, horses, livestock, dirt, boots, tractors, long days and country life aren’t a trend or an aesthetic for us — they’re simply part of our everyday.
But when I started shopping for Eliot, I struggled to find children’s clothing that captured that lifestyle without feeling overly cartoonish, cheaply made or uncomfortable.
So I started researching.
One brand led to another. I learned more about bamboo, organic cotton, modal, wholesale buying, sizing, margins and approximately 400 other things I never knew I needed to understand.
Eventually, that research turned into Little Sprouts Outfitters.
The question I asked myself then is still the question behind almost every buying decision I make today:
Would I buy this for Eliot?
If the answer isn’t yes, it probably doesn’t belong at Little Sprouts.
The First Year Has Taught Me A Lot
Owning a small business has a funny way of teaching you things very quickly.
I’ve learned that sometimes the item you’re positive everyone is going to love sits on the rack…and something you almost didn’t order sells out immediately.
I’ve learned that inventory systems are not always your friend.
I’ve learned that packing an order for a repeat customer never stops being exciting.
And I’ve learned just how much people love bamboo pajamas. Seriously. I understand it — once you feel good bamboo, it’s hard to go back.
But one of the biggest lessons has been learning to listen.
Customers have asked for more newborn sizes, so I’ve worked to bring more in when brands offer them. You’ve told me which fabrics you love, what sizes are missing, what styles your kids actually wear, and which pieces you want to see come back.
Little Sprouts today is already different from the boutique I imagined a year ago because you’ve helped shape it.

Markets Changed Everything
Some of my favorite moments this year have happened outside of the website.
Local markets and events have given me the chance to actually meet so many of you.
There’s something completely different about watching someone walk into my booth, pick up a bamboo pajama and immediately say, “Oh my gosh, this is SO soft.”
Online, I can tell you something is soft.
I can show you the stretch.
I can make videos explaining the fabric and fit.
But being able to hand it to you and let you experience the quality for yourself is different.
Even better is when someone who first found Little Sprouts at a market comes back months later, places an online order or stops by another event.
Those moments have reminded me that this business isn’t really about transactions.
It’s about relationships.

I'm Still Figuring It Out
I think small businesses can sometimes look much more polished from the outside than they feel behind the scenes.
There have absolutely been mistakes this year.
I’ve ordered too much of certain things and not enough of others. I’ve had inventory counts be wrong. I’ve questioned purchases after placing them. I've stayed up way too late working on product listings, emails and collection launches.
There have been moments when I’ve wondered whether I’m doing enough, posting enough, selling enough or growing fast enough.
But I'm learning that building something worthwhile doesn't happen overnight.
Little Sprouts doesn't need to become the biggest children's boutique.
I want it to become one that people trust.
I want you to know that when something makes it into one of my collections, I chose it intentionally. I looked at the fabric, the quality, the price, the fit and whether it truly belongs here.
I'd rather grow slowly and build something meaningful than fill the website with products simply for the sake of having more.

More Than Just Clothes
The older Eliot gets, the more I realize how quickly these little seasons pass.
When Little Sprouts launched, he had just turned two.
Now he's three.
Someday he'll be eight and wearing the youth sizes hanging in my shop. Maybe he'll come to markets with me. Maybe he'll help pack orders. Maybe he'll think his mom's little clothing business is incredibly cool…or incredibly embarrassing. 😂
Either way, I hope he understands why I built it.
Little Sprouts started because I was his mom searching for clothes that felt like us.
But somewhere along the way, it became bigger than that.
It's become a way to celebrate farm kids, rodeo kids, little adventurers, babies heading home from the hospital, toddlers running through sprinklers, cousins headed to the county fair and families creating ordinary memories they'll someday wish they could relive.
The clothes are part of those moments.
But the moments are what matter.
Here's to Year Two 🌱
As I head into the second year of Little Sprouts Outfitters, I'm incredibly grateful.
Grateful for every order.
Every review.
Every person who has stopped at my booth.
Every share, comment and recommendation to a friend.
Every customer who has trusted my little business to help dress someone they love.
And especially grateful that an idea inspired by my own little Sprout has grown into something I’m genuinely proud of.
We're still growing.
I'm still learning.
And there is so much more I want to build.
But for today, I'm going to take a minute to appreciate how far this little idea has come.

Happy first birthday, Little Sprouts Outfitters. 🌱
And thank you for growing right alongside us.
